Carbon management strategy

United Utilities carbon pledge card

Last year we set out our carbon management strategy designed to reduce the trend of rising emissions. Its main aims are:

To cut our carbon emissions by 26 per cent by 2012

To halve our emissions by 2035

To influence our external stakeholders to help us achieve these aims

To make carbon considerations integral to the way we do business

We plan to meet our target of an absolute reduction in our emissions by 26 per cent by 2012 in two ways:

We will cut emissions by 18 per cent by buying green energy

We will achieve the additional eight per cent by reducing the impact of our own activities such as improving the energy efficiency of some of our processes. In 2007/08, new Combined Heat and Power (CHP) generation produced enough renewable energy to save over 10,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent,

While our reduction targets relate to business activities for which we are directly responsible,  we also plan to influence the emission of greenhouse gases on the contracts which we operate, working closely with our clients to identify projects that can reduce these emissions.
