Sustainable consumption and production
We are working to make more sustainable use of resources. We can make a difference through the choices we make in buying goods and services; creating, improving and replacing our physical assets; and in managing our waste and water resources.
In 2007, we developed a sustainable supply chain strategy based on the government’s flexible framework and appointed a sustainable supply chain manager to achieve best value for what we buy.
We have created a method of assessing the carbon and sustainability impacts of our future investment, as well as continuing to raise the standards required of our investment partners, for example, incorporating climate change requirements into our procedures and we are working with our regulators to achieve improved performance.
Our new waste and resource use plan will help us use more products derived from waste. We no longer send sludge to landfill; instead we treat and recycle it, harnessing the gas from that process as a source of energy. We won four awards last year for our waste management innovation in the areas of sludge management and the reuse of excavated material.
The way we manage our water resources has continued to improve during 2007. We again hit our regulatory target with a reduction in leakage from our network of water pipes from 468 megalitres per day to 462 megalitres per day and we have continued our campaign to encourage our customers to use water wisely.
