Society
We provide essential services to millions of customers across the UK and overseas. The very nature of what we do brings with it a significant impact on people and society, our customers, our employees and the communities in which we operate.
Our 9,000 employees are fundamental to our business success and to ensure we sustain success we measure how engaged our employees are with the business. Over the last year, we have also developed a plan to build and develop our skills and talent pipeline, ensuring we will have the necessary skills for the future.
Our operations have a direct impact among the communities in which we work and last year we invested around £2.5 million including cash, time and in-kind help to mitigate some of the short-term impact of schemes which will ultimately bring longer-lasting benefits for our customers. We have continued to support our own employees in community activity by enabling them to volunteer in company time, matching their own fund-raising efforts up to £250 and by making grants of up to £250 to community groups to which our people give their time. In 2007, our support via employee fund-raising and match funding amounted to around £125,000. Although these figures are a reduction in previous years, they reflect the re-structure of our business, which saw an overall reduction in our employee numbers from 17,000 to 9,000.
