Over the last year, the structure of our organisation changed significantly and we have seen a reduction in the number of our employees from nearly 17,000 (full time equivalent) to around 9,000 principally due to the sale of Vertex.

Our employees are fundamental to our business success and it is vital they understand our business direction, feel pride in their work and are motivated to go the extra mile for our customers. Therefore, we measure how engaged our employees feel, rather than how satisfied they are with their jobs.
In 2007, 63 per cent said they felt engaged with our business. Our target for 2008 is to increase this score to 70 per cent through targeted action plans to encourage and support local managers to improve the engagement scores within their teams. As part of our focus on building for the future, we are also continuing to look at how we can best attract, retain and develop skills and talent across the company.
