As a result of the ‘Think Carbon’ employee engagement programme we set up a network of carbon champions in December 2007. Our 23 champions work together to discuss what their role should be and how they might get the best results from their business areas. The overriding aim of the group is to encourage employees to help us in our quest to reduce our carbon emissions.
Our champions are also challenged with seeking out suitable projects for our carbon funding scheme. We are allocating £1 million to help carry out projects with a carbon benefit. The first project to be supported by this scheme is a motor replacement programme in water operations.
They have also all attended a carbon master class given by our own carbon manager to help provide them with the knowledge they need to be effective in communicating and motivating others in the business.
In the future we hope to expand our network of champions, find more projects for our carbon funding scheme, introduce carbon calculation tools and review our business policies to find potential areas for carbon reduction. We also want to encourage employees to always ‘Think Carbon’.
