Sheepscar Aggregate Recycling Centre

Innovation award for waste management

In 2007 the Sheepscar Aggregate Recycling Centre, which is operated by our gas business, won two Rushlight Awards.

These awards recognise technology and innovation that helps to address climate change, waste and pollution management. The recycling centre takes material that has been excavated from gas mains works, sorts it and mixes the useable part of it with cement. This cement bound material, known as CBEM3, is then used to fill trenches once work has been completed. The mix has been refined to ensure strength and operational requirements are consistently met.

The recycling of excavated material is much more environmentally-friendly than land-filling waste. Using recycled material also reduces the amount of virgin raw materials we use in our operations. In addition this project is commercially viable and saves us money.

CBEM3 is a flowable material that not only makes trench filling faster but also has health and safety benefits too. It removes the need for manual tamping with vibrating plates which in turn reduces the potential for vibration injuries.
