In October 2007, we ran a successful workshop in partnership with the National Industrial Symbiosis Programme in the North West on using secondary aggregate for trench filling. Using recycled materials reduces the amount of waste being sent to landfill and the amount of natural resources required.
Our main network partners, Balfour Beatty and Morgan Est, were closely involved in the workshop which highlighted our practical experience of using recycled aggregates. The event also helped to:
• Establish a network of organisations to promote the use of recycled materials for trench filling;
• Increase awareness of the required specification for materials that can be used for trench filling; and
• Identify potential business opportunities.
To ensure that these achievements are translated into actual business benefits, an action plan has been developed and is being carried out. It includes identifying potential sources of recycled aggregate, promoting the use of the material to local authorities and running another workshop to highlight the innovative services and technologies which increase the amount of recycled aggregate used.
