We have joined forces with the Health and Safety Executive and the Chemical Industries Association to develop an early warning system for our sites which handle or store dangerous substances.
We own and operate a number of sites which fall under the Control of Major Accident Hazards (COMAH) Regulations 1999, as amended in 2005. COMAH applies mainly to the chemical industry, but also to other industries where dangerous substances are kept or used used in large quantities.
We have introduced a series of Process Safety performance indicators (PSPIs) to make sure that major hazard risks are under control on our sites. A small number of carefully chosen indicators monitor the status of critical control systems and provide an early warning should controls deteriorate. These indicators are reported monthly to the senior business management team where they are reviewed to provide reassurance that the risks are being managed effectively.
We are the first water company to introduce these performance indicators into our health and safety management system.
