Our regulated water business produced just over 22,000 tonnes of grit and screenings in 2007/08, of which 3,430 tonnes were recycled through a trial of co-composting with green waste. Nearly 8,000 tonnes of ash produced from sludge incineration is recycled as landfill capping material.
We increased the proportion of the 134,000 tonnes of water treatment works sludge produced that was recycled to agricultural land or for use in brick making from 25 per cent to 35 per cent between 2006/07 and 2007/08. Achieving further improvements in the area of sustainable waste management relies heavily on markets available for recycled products and their perceived acceptability as well as the legal and economic frameworks around waste.
