Working with customers to reduce water use

The latest work in our on-going programme of encouraging customer water efficiency involved kitting out customers’ homes free of charge with water saving devices.

In 2007 we undertook around 400 trial 'visit and fix' household audits in Warrington. This involved a plumber fitting the devices and the provision of water saving advice. The project was devised with the help of Waterwise. The devices, installed by contractor Mouchel, include a revolutionary low-flow showerhead which reduces the amount of water a power shower uses by mixing the flow of water with air. Also installed is an eco-beta – a dual flush conversion device, which converts a single flush toilet to a dual flush toilet by adding a small plastic device to the inside of the toilet cistern. Lastly, Save-a-Flush bags have been fitted where appropriate – they save a litre of water every time someone flushes the loo.

We have also repaired dripping taps and small leaks to make the homes water tight. Water usage is being monitored over six months to see how much water these new devices are saving. We are also surveying each volunteer to get feedback on the devices.
